Healthy habits for contact lens wearers
Good habits keep your eyes comfortable and help prevent infections. Here are the do’s and don’ts we teach every patient.

Do
Contact lens do’s.
- Wash and dry your hands before touching your lenses or eyes
- Use fresh solution every time; never top off old solution
- Rub and rinse reusable lenses as directed, even with no-rub solutions
- Put lenses in before makeup, and take them out before removing makeup
- Replace lenses on schedule, and replace your case often
- Keep a backup pair of glasses
- Bring your lens boxes or prescription to every exam

Don’t
Contact lens don’ts.
- Don’t rinse or store lenses in tap water
- Don’t swim or shower in your lenses
- Don’t sleep in your lenses unless your doctor prescribed overnight wear
- Don’t wear lenses when your eyes are red, painful or irritated
- Don’t share lenses or wear someone else’s
- Don’t wear lenses past their replacement date

When to call
Take your lenses out and call us right away if you have:
- Eye pain or a red eye that does not go away
- Blurry vision that does not clear after removing your lenses
- Light sensitivity or discharge
These can be signs of an eye infection. Every Bolt Eye Group office offers same-day visits for red, painful eyes on the days it is open.
