Beautiful facility & incredibly friendly staff! This was our first pediatric exam. The receptionist kindly offered use drinks upon arrival. They have a chalk table and tic tack toe in the waiting area for kids. The doctor was so great at explaining to my little and made her feel 100% comfortable! 10/10

I had a fantastic experience … She is incredibly thorough and takes the time to explain how eye care connects to overall health, which I really appreciated. The office itself is absolutely adorable—stylish, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed. The entire staff is so friendly and helpful … They really go the extra mile with thoughtful touches like a coffee bar and complimentary beverages.

This is not your ordinary optometry office; you're greeted with wide smiles, authentic care, and more hospitality than a charming farm house in a deep hollow (pronounced "holler"). … Keep up the great work, and I'll "see" you again soon! See what I did there? 🤓

Ortho-K and Myopia Control in Johnson City

Animated Ortho-K lens fit under fluorescein, myopia control in Johnson City TN

If your child's glasses prescription gets stronger every year, that's myopia (nearsightedness) progressing. It's worth slowing down, because a higher prescription in childhood means a higher lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and myopic macular degeneration.

At our Johnson City office, Dr. Susan Reimbold fits orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses. These are custom gas-permeable lenses your child wears only while sleeping. They gently reshape the front of the eye overnight, so your child sees clearly all day with no glasses or daytime contacts. The same lenses are one of the best-studied ways to slow myopia in kids. Each fitting starts with a corneal map, and we follow up closely through the first weeks.

Dr. Reimbold works alongside Barbra Williams, COT, COA, a certified ophthalmic technician who helps with Ortho-K and scleral lens fittings, from the first corneal map to teaching kids and parents how to put lenses in and care for them.

Ortho-K isn't the only option. Myopia-control soft lenses and specialty glasses lenses suit some families better, and Dr. Reimbold will walk you through all of them.

Eye Exams in Johnson City, TN

What a Bolt Eye Group exam includes

A comprehensive exam with us is more than reading letters off a chart. We check your prescription carefully and measure your eye pressure. Then we look at the front and back of the eye with a slit lamp, and we use digital imaging to photograph the retina and optic nerve. Those photos give us a baseline to compare against every year, so small changes stand out early.

Why a yearly exam matters

Many serious eye problems don't hurt and don't blur your vision until they're advanced. That includes glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration. The blood vessels at the back of your eye can also show early signs of high blood pressure and diabetes, sometimes before a medical doctor has caught them. For children, an exam is also how we find focusing and eye-teaming problems that a school screening can miss and that can look like trouble with reading.

How to schedule

Book online any time, or call or text 423-928-1010 during office hours. Bring your insurance cards, your current glasses and contacts, and a list of the medications you take.

LASIK and Cataract Co-Management and Luxury Eyewear in Johnson City

Thinking about LASIK, or told you're getting cataracts? Our doctors do the full evaluation here, and Dr. Woolfson, a board-certified ophthalmologist, provides surgical consultation and co-management. Before and after surgery, most of your visits happen right here in Johnson City with the eye doctors you already know.

Our Johnson City optical carries luxury, designer and independent frames you won't find at a chain store, and you can browse with a coffee from our coffee bar. Our opticians take measurements, check every finished pair, and adjust your glasses at pickup. If your eyes burn, feel gritty or tire on screens, ask about dry eye care too. Johnson City Eye Care FAQs

How much does an eye exam cost in Johnson City, Tennessee?

It depends on your coverage and the kind of visit. Most vision plans, including VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision and Spectera, cover a yearly routine exam with a small copay. If you come in for a medical problem like dry eye, an infection, glaucoma or diabetes, the visit is usually billed to your medical insurance instead, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna and Humana. If you're paying on your own, call 423-928-1010 and we'll give you the price before you book. We also accept HSA and FSA cards and CareCredit.

Does Bolt Eye Group Johnson City take my insurance?

We accept VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, Spectera and other vision plans, as well as Medicare and most major medical plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna and Humana. Call us with your plan name and we'll check your benefits before your visit.

Can I be seen the same day for an eye problem?

Yes. If you have a red, painful or injured eye, sudden vision changes, or something stuck in your eye, call 423-928-1010 and we'll do our best to see you that day. For sudden flashes of light with a curtain over your vision, call right away. That can be a retinal emergency.

At what age should my child have an eye exam?

The American Optometric Association recommends a first exam between 6 and 12 months of age, at least one between ages 3 and 5, before first grade, and then every year through school. If your child squints, holds books close, rubs their eyes or avoids reading, come in sooner.

Is Ortho-K safe for kids?

Ortho-K has been used for years and is well studied in children. The main risk with any overnight contact lens is infection, and that risk stays low with good cleaning habits and regular follow-up visits. Dr. Reimbold teaches every family the care routine and checks your child's eyes on a set schedule.
