Scleral lenses for eyes that are hard to fit
When regular glasses and contacts are not enough, scleral lenses can give clear, comfortable vision for keratoconus, irregular corneas and severe dry eye.
What are scleral lenses?
A smooth new surface for your eye.
Scleral lenses are large rigid gas-permeable lenses. Instead of resting on the cornea, they vault over it and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera). The space under the lens is filled with saline, which keeps the cornea bathed in fluid all day.
Because the lens does not touch the cornea, many people find scleral lenses more comfortable than smaller rigid lenses, and the fluid layer smooths out an irregular cornea for sharp vision.
Who they help
Scleral lenses may help if you have:
- Keratoconus or other corneal ectasia
- An irregular cornea after an injury or past surgery, including after LASIK or PRK
- Severe dry eye that drops alone have not helped
- High astigmatism or a prescription that regular contacts cannot correct
- Contact lenses that keep falling out or feel uncomfortable
Your fitting
Custom lenses need a careful fitting process.
1. Measurements
We map your cornea with topography and examine the front of your eye.
2. Trial and design
We try diagnostic lenses on your eye and design custom lenses for your shape and prescription.
3. Training and follow-up
We teach you how to put in, remove and care for your lenses, and we fine-tune the fit at follow-up visits.

Are scleral lenses hard to put in?
It takes some practice. We train you step by step, and most people get comfortable with it quickly.
How long can I wear them each day?
Many people wear scleral lenses all day. They are removed at night. Your doctor will give you a wearing schedule.
