Vision, Headaches and the Brain (Neuro-Ophthalmology)
At a glance: your eyes are wired directly to your brain. Swelling of the optic nerve, a gap in your side vision or new double vision can be the first sign of a nerve or brain problem, and an eye doctor is often the first to see it.
Signs that point beyond the eye
- Headaches together with blurred or dimming vision
- Seeing double, especially if it goes away when you cover one eye
- Missing areas in your side vision, such as bumping into things on one side
- Pain when moving one eye, or colors looking faded in that eye
- One pupil larger than the other, or a newly droopy eyelid
- Flashing zigzag patterns before a headache
What we test
At Bolt Eye Group, a neuro-ophthalmic check can include:
- Visual field testing to map your side vision and spot patterns of loss
- OCT of the optic nerve to measure the nerve fiber layer
- Pupil, color vision and eye movement checks
- A dilated look at the optic nerve for swelling or paleness
What happens next
If something looks off, we explain what we found and share the results with your primary care doctor or specialist. When it is needed, we help arrange an MRI or a visit with a neurologist or neuro-ophthalmologist. Our doctors coordinate with them so your eye findings are part of the bigger picture.
Call 911 or go to the ER for
Sudden vision loss, sudden double vision, a severe headache with vision changes, or vision changes with weakness, numbness, a drooping face or slurred speech.
Common questions
What is a visual field test?
You look at a target and press a button each time you see a small light flash in your side vision. The results map how far and how evenly you can see in every direction, which helps show whether a problem is in the eye, the optic nerve or the brain.
Can an eye exam find a brain tumor or stroke?
An eye exam cannot diagnose them by itself, but certain patterns of optic nerve swelling or visual field loss can be the first clue. When we see one, we contact your physician and help arrange the next tests.
Is double vision an emergency?
New, sudden double vision should be checked right away, especially with headache, a droopy eyelid, weakness or trouble speaking. Go to the emergency room or call 911 if any of those are present.
