Itchy, watery eyes? Let’s calm them down.
Eye allergies are common, uncomfortable and very treatable. We figure out what is going on and find relief that fits your eyes.
Signs of eye allergies
Itching is the big clue.
Allergic conjunctivitis happens when the thin lining of the eye reacts to things like pollen, dust, mold, pet dander or smoke. It is not contagious.
Itching
The most common sign of eye allergies, often in both eyes.
Redness and watering
Pink or red eyes with clear, watery tears.
Puffy eyelids
Swollen lids, especially in the morning.
Treatment
Relief options.
We examine your eyes with a microscope to confirm allergies and rule out dry eye or infection, which can look similar. Then we recommend the right treatment.
- Avoiding triggers, cool compresses and preservative-free artificial tears
- Antihistamine and mast-cell stabilizer eye drops
- Short courses of prescription anti-inflammatory drops for flare-ups
- Switching to daily disposable contact lenses during allergy season
- Referral to an allergist for allergy testing or allergy shots when needed
Questions
Eye allergy questions.
Is it allergies or pink eye?
Allergies usually itch and affect both eyes with clear, watery tears. Infections are more likely to cause thick discharge or start in one eye. If you are not sure, call us for a same-day visit.
Can I wear contacts with eye allergies?
Often yes. Daily disposable lenses are a good choice because allergens do not build up on them. Remove lenses when your eyes are red or itchy.
Should I use drops that get the red out?
Not regularly. With frequent use, they can make redness come back worse. Ask your doctor for a better option.
