Why a contact lens exam is different.
A contact lens sits right on your eye, so the fit and the health of your cornea matter. A contact lens exam includes measurements and checks that a glasses exam does not.
- Measuring the curve and size of your cornea
- Checking your tear film and the front of the eye
- Trying lenses on your eye and checking the fit and vision
- Teaching new wearers how to put lenses in, take them out and clean them
- A follow-up visit to make sure everything is comfortable and healthy
Questions
Contact lens questions.
Can I wear contacts if I have astigmatism?
Yes. Toric lenses correct astigmatism, and scleral or rigid lenses can help when astigmatism is high or irregular.
Can I sleep in my contacts?
Unless your doctor has prescribed a lens for overnight wear, do not sleep in contacts. Sleeping in lenses greatly raises the risk of serious eye infections.
What age can kids start wearing contacts?
It depends on the child’s maturity more than age. Many kids do very well in daily disposables. Ask your doctor at your child’s exam.
Why do I need a yearly contact lens exam?
Contact lens prescriptions expire, and your eyes can change. A yearly exam keeps your lenses fitting well and your eyes healthy.
