More than “which is better, one or two?”
A full health check for your eyes, not just a new prescription.
Many eye diseases cause no pain and no blurry vision until damage is already done. A comprehensive exam is how we catch them early, while there is still time to protect your sight.
Your prescription
We measure your vision at distance and up close and fine-tune your prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
Eye pressure and the optic nerve
We check your eye pressure and look closely at the optic nerve, where glaucoma shows up first.
The retina and macula
We examine the back of the eye for diabetic changes, macular degeneration, retinal tears and other problems.
Eye teaming and focusing
We check how your eyes work together. Problems here can make reading and screens hard and cause headaches.
The front of the eye
We examine the lids, cornea and tear film for dry eye, allergies, infection and early cataracts.
Your health story
Diabetes, blood pressure and many medicines affect the eyes. We look for those signs and tell you what we find.
Advanced imaging
See your own retina, layer by layer.
For $39, every patient gets photos of the retina and optic nerve and a map of the cornea. The photos let your doctor confirm your retina and optic nerve are healthy. The map screens for keratoconus, which now has an FDA-approved treatment. Choose an in-office telehealth visit, and your doctor reviews your images with you live on a large screen.
- A picture of your retina that becomes your personal baseline for every future visit.
- With an in-office telehealth visit: the same $39 also covers two OCT glaucoma scans, one of the optic nerve and one of the macula.
- Also with an in-office telehealth visit: you take all your images home on the free I-Scan Platinum Lifetime Baseline, a credit-card-size USB drive.
What to expect
Your visit, step by step.
1. Check-in and history
Bring your glasses, contact lens boxes, insurance cards and a list of your medicines.
2. Testing and imaging
Our team runs your pretests and imaging, then your doctor examines your eyes.
3. Results with you
We review your images with you, answer questions and help you choose glasses or contacts if you need them.
Medicare patients: Medicare usually covers the medical eye exam. The refraction (the test that sets your glasses prescription) is a separate fee that Medicare does not cover.
Questions
Eye exam questions we hear every day.
How often should I have an eye exam?
Most adults need an exam every year or two. Go every year if you have diabetes, a glaucoma risk or a strong prescription, or if you wear contacts. Your doctor will tell you the right schedule for your eyes. Children should have exams before school starts and as their doctor recommends.
Will my eyes be dilated?
Sometimes. Dilation lets the doctor see the edges of the retina. Retinal imaging can reduce how often you need it, but your doctor may still recommend dilation, for example if you have diabetes or new symptoms. Bring sunglasses just in case.
Is a vision screening the same as an eye exam?
No. A screening at school or the DMV only checks how well you read letters. It does not check the health of your eyes.
Do you see emergencies?
Yes. Every office offers same-day visits, on the days it is open, for red, painful or injured eyes, sudden flashes or floaters, or a sudden change in vision. Call the office closest to you.
Do you take my insurance?
We accept VSP, EyeMed, Medicare and most major medical plans, plus Davis, Spectera and other vision plans. Call your office if you are not sure.
